Terminology Explained
Porcelain
Rustic Edges
Porcelain pavers and tiles are fired at higher
temperatures, resulting in a very low water
absorption rate. This characteristic makes
them exceptionally durable and resistant to
wear. Their frost resistance also makes them
ideal for outdoor applications. Porcelain tiles
can be used for both wall and floor
installations.
Rustic-edged tiles have more irregular, worn or
chipped edges, giving them an aged, timeworn
appearance. The edges are intentionally
softened or slightly chipped to replicate the
look of old, reclaimed materials.
Ceramic
Ceramic tiles are made from various clays and
then fired at high temperatures. They are
generally better suited to indoor projects and
are often smaller format and mainly used on
wall applications.
Terracotta
Terracotta tiles are crafted from natural clay
and fired at low temperatures, giving them a
warm, earthy tone. They are typically unglazed
and porous, requiring sealing to prevent
staining and moisture absorption.
Tumbled Edges
Unlike rustic tiles, where the edges are
irregular and worn, this type has straight,
rectified sides but with a subtle chamfer that
has been distressed or tumbled to create a
slightly weathered look.
Matt
Matt tiles have a smooth, non-reflective
surface that absorbs light, creating a soft,
natural look while maintaining a consistent
finish.
Gloss
Gloss tiles have a highly reflective surface that
bounces light, giving them a bright, polished
appearance with a smooth texture.
Rectified v. Non Rectified
Rectified tiles have been manufactured to a
very precise tolerance. This means they are cut
to a exact measurements with a near perfect
straight edge. Non-rectified tiles are pressed
into a mould and therefore have a slightly
curved edge. Due to this, more grout is visible
between the tiles, offering a more obvious
break between each tile.
Wavy Edges
Wavy-edged tiles have deliberately uneven,
undulating edges that create a handmade,
artisanal look. This effect mimics traditional
handcrafted ceramics where the edges are not
perfectly straight.
Semi Polished
Semi-polished tiles have a partially polished
surface with a subtle sheen, offering a balance
between the low reflectivity of matt tiles and
the shine of gloss tiles.
R11 Slip Rating
R11 slip rating indicates that a tile has a high
level of slip resistance, making it suitable for
outdoor and wet areas. In outdoor porcelain
paving, an R11 rating means the surface has
enough grip to reduce the risk of slipping,
even in wet conditions such as rain or around
pools. This level of slip resistance is achieved
through surface texture or special coatings,
providing a balance between safety and ease
of cleaning.
